I recommend it, mostly because you can adapt to more sending positions, such as awkward FD milk crate tables. Also, you will find that you can switch hands pretty quickly to handle the inevitable insect itch. The key (pardon the pun) is to change the paddle configuration for the correct hand. Make the dits always on the thumb. Apparently, the brain deals with "thumb=dits and index=dahs" much better than "left finger=dits and right finger=dahs". Go figure. If you want to try opposite hand sending for a while without rewiring your paddles (for those who lack programmable paddle orientation), simply turn the paddles backward and drape your left hand over the top of the box (in the case of MFJ). Your thumb and index finger will line up with the dit and dah paddles correctly. BTW, this technique works pretty well when you need to change sending hands quickly. Like Al, I've failed miserably trying to write something while sending something else. I guess that's the next exercise to try. But then I've never been able to talk and send at the same time, either. I should probably get rid of my gum while sending, too. To: info-hams@ucsd.edu I just got my plates after wanting them for a long time, well a year. And I don't think it makes me any more of a target than any one else with a largish antenna on his car. I have a glass mount, so that extra-large Cellular antenna may look a bit tastier, but I never leave my radio in the car and I always lock it. I've been called radio geek by people who know what my HT is and yuppy by people who don't. I just take the mind that crooks are going to break in if they want to regardless of what I've got stuck to the outside of my car. I design and integrate comm systems in a multitude of applications. I've designed covert antennas and electronically rotatable arrays. It's about as close to playing ham radio as you're going to get. Look to companies like Watkin's Johnson, or as a start, some national consulting firms that specialize in secure communications ( a fast growing industry). What did I bring to the table? 14 years design experience using ASICs, FPGA's (Xilinx), A/D and D/A systems, high speed Fiber-Optic interfaces design; basically a background in analog/digital design. The other pluses were my General Class Commercial Radiotelephone license, and my General ham ticket, which 'networked' me in the door. (Helps when your prospective employer is a ham also). Call some of your contracting agencies and see who their clients are and if you can fill any spots. This a good way to get your foot in the door, and gives both you and your employer a 'try before you buy' period. Good luck. I ran nets on 40M when I first got on the air, using a kilowatt, ground mounted 1/4 wave 40M vertical, and 40 buried radials. I had an excellent signal and ran net control on many occassions. There were times we moved the net up/down frequency if the main freq was in use. My favorite is 'colliding' nets. I still get a kick out of listening to some folks hashing it away on 80M. I'm glad we've got the WARC bands, 17M being my favorite. I've yet to run into that problem their. Congrats on the tech + and hope to work you one day... After posting it I read and re-read to the point I wasn't really sure what the intention was. It looked to me like the process had to occur before the expiration of the license in order for the operator to maintain operating privileges. I don't ever mean to lead anyone astray. And since you mention this was hashed out a year ago (before I got on-line) I imagine someone in that thread came up with the correct information. And I will gladly take your word for it. It seems that clarification is in order though. Or at least elaboration of the rule. To: info-hams@ucsd.edu Hey Guys, you all know alot about RF and Radio stuff. I am kinda new at this but I have learned a few things. However I don't know how to make RF filters. I have an RCI 2950 transciever with a Texas Star DX 667V amplifier and a truck stop Special antenna(1/2 wave Base Loaded with about 3.5 ft whip on Magnet-Mount base. Any how I have a problem When I am talking on either AM or SSB. When keyed up, If I touch the mike to my face or mouth while talking it squeals. On AM it it is not so bad, but on SSB it is fine till I start talking and then it stays keyed all the way up and squeals. I have tried and tried to adjust the mike gain to where it will not squeal, but it doesn't help it. I was wondering if What I need was to somehow rig up a RF filter at the Mike Element to keep it from doing this. It is the stock mike. I put a ceramic capactor across the element and it helped it on AM but made it worse on SSB. I am Totally Frustrated. It does not squeal when I run the RAdio without the amp on. It seems I have heard before that those Metal mike elements can act like a capacitor or a conducter for RF. But I don't know for sure. Any help would be very apreciated. I miss talking DX and local without the squeal. Please help me if you can. I check this rec. at least once a day... Well, thanx in advance. The loop is so narrow on b/w that it makes using that band in the summer a pleasure compared to a full size. Ironically, many amateurs feared the worse when the no-code was started and I think it's brought in some of the most decent people I've yet met on the VHF/UHF bands. What I have seen the past 17 years is the HF bands degrade (20M and lower, 160M still seems decent, though). What we may be experiencing are the dying throes of elitists who will ultimately disappear from the HF bands in the future and make room for a more progressive, contemporary lot. The HF bands, after all, are NOT in danger of being removed (no commercial interest there, not enough bandwidth; UHF and above, that's another story...).
